Jewellery through the recession

Friday, November 27th, 2009

We have adorned ourselves with jewellery since time immemorial, so has the recession impacted on the jewellery we are buying?

Undoubtedly because of the record highs in gold prices this year, there has been a down turn in the in the sales of gold jewellery with silver jewellery and beaded costume jewellery becoming ever more popular.

However to see how the market has really changed, turn on the TV and observe the female newsreader and presenters most of whom are all wearing brightly coloured  large pieces of costume jewellery. Browse through celebrity magazines and you will see the same pattern. Large beads strung on long chains in all colours and it seems the bigger and brighter the better.

Is this a case of bad times are here but I want to cheer myself up by wearing this gaudy trinket. Remember that colour can have a big affect on mood.

It’s not just at the cheaper end of the market with costume jewellery that we have seen this change. There has been a proliferation of charm jewellery with young women clambering for the latest must have bracelet which she can customise with individual beads and charms. One can only sympathise with any parent or boyfriend faced with the demand for the this latest craze as these items of jewellery don’t come cheap. By the time you have filled your bangle with those tacky charms, you will have kissed goodbye to several hundred pounds at the cheaper end or goods made in the far east. It is possible to pay into the thousands for these trinkets which are being mass produced and on sale on every high street and all over the web. Whatever happened to individuality and taste?

How quickly before this latest novelty wears off. This latest craze has sparked off a huge rush to copy these must haves and fakes are all over the internet at more realistic prices. At least shoppers can bag a bargain on items that are likely to fade out of popularity very fast as the fashion craze changes.

For those that would prefer something a little more tasteful and individual, even though times are tight, why not invest in a classy affordable item that will last for many years and won’t date. There are still many small independent designers in the UK producing beautiful quality hand crafted silver jewellery at prices to suit all budgets. In the UK we have lost much of our manufacturing base. lets not lose our jewellery designers.

Amber Atherton is fast becoming the darling of the fashion world in her own right.

With her chiseled looks (reminiscent of a younger Kate Moss) its not hard to see why she has been courted by such celebrity magazines as Love Tatler Marie Claire et al

But not content with being on one side of the camera Amber explains how her passion for fashion translates into a Jewellery Empire built around myflashtrash.com and here is why she thinks its so successful

Choosing the right designers is key you have to really be in tune with your market audience and find the designers that stand out from the crowd and more than that they must be producing Attention grabbing designer jewellery

The hottest name in designer jewellery right now, designer Vivienne Barz is a London based Californian export whose irresistable designs are quickly becoming a fashion favourite with style goddesses and celebrites on both sides of the pond.

Designer Vivienne Barz whilst growing up on a farm in a 3000-person town in rural Northern California, Barz spent her childhood surrounded by nature and found inspiration in her rugged environment. Even as a young child, Barz knew she was destined to work in fashion: while most girls her age played with dolls, she spent her play time constructing jewelry using materials found in the fields behind her house, mixed with chains and pearls from her mother’s costume jewelry.

After her move to Southern California as a young adult, Barz began traveling the world on surfing expeditions, never forgetting her love of jewelry design. As fate would have it, Barz was a better shopper than surfer. On her days abroad when the surf was too advanced, Barz would hit the local village markets in search of unique finds. Five continents and fourteen countries later, Barz had acquired a vast assortment of distinctive beads, gemstones and fabric, ranging from zebu horn in Madagascar, coral in Indonesia, jade in New Zealand, to silk in Japan. Upon returning to California, she began crafting jewelry using her finds from the countries she visited mixed with American materials.

When Barz began wearing her pieces, women would stop her on the street, inquiring where they could find such exotic jewelry, most occasions offering to buy the necklace off her neck. Barz’s designs soon generated a buzz and, in late 2007, Barz cashed in her savings, left her job in marketing and created her dream company: vivi+vivi.

While most of her current collections are crafted of entirely new Western materials, Barz still uses her global and vintage finds in her One-of-a-Kind pieces.

Barz is the epitome of the designers we strive to promote and our customers certainly approve says Amber.
