Choosing your wedding rings

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Whilst the engagement ring may be an unexpected surprise, most couples will choose their wedding rings together – and many different factors may affect their choice of wedding rings.

Firstly, other jewellery – namely, the engagement ring itself!

Before you consider a wedding ring, look at the existing jewellery of your fiancée, consider whether they wear silver or gold – or both. The groom may wish to consider how the wedding ring fits with a watch for instance – perhaps a family heirloom. If a couple have differing tastes and styles they may try to reflect both in the colours of the wedding rings – for example, a ring that incorporates more than one different colour. They may choose to opt for gold – as a more traditional, beautiful style of wedding ring – as a compromise in tastes. Whereas platinum is a very popular trend for wedding rings at the moment – think of the years to come, when you will hopefully still be wearing your wedding rings together.

Ultimately, the decision to opt for gold, white gold or platinum is based on the personal choice of the bride and groom but there are other important factors to consider other than just preference of the design. Some metals are more durable than others and you need to bear in mind that some people can have allergic reactions to certain metals.

Perhaps what may inform your decision most of all is the price – gold may offer better value for money, but perhaps if a partner has a preference for a lighter coloured metal, white gold wedding rings may offer a desirable alternative. Platinum is often the preferred choice, but prices can be far more expensive than gold.

Whatever your decision, a reputable jeweller such as us at Marlows will be able to help advise you, making the choice an enjoyable experience.

Wedding Ring Sets For Him and Her

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Wedding ring sets can be an ideal option for those couples who want a matching set of wedding rings. Are you planning on facing the world with matched wedding rings? Would a his and hers wedding ring set suit you?

Advantages of wedding ring sets:

* Cost effective. As a general rule, buying wedding rings as a complete set should cost you less than purchasing them individually.

* Match. The greatest benefit of wedding ring sets is that the wedding rings are matched. Although often the groom’s wedding ring may well be a bigger version of the bride’s so as to look in proportion on a bigger finger. While traditionally, a wedding ring set involved matching wedding rings for the bride and groom, today’s wedding ring sets can also encompass wedding rings that need not be identical, but share a common theme. For example, both the wedding rings are Celtic, but perhaps the bridal ring is inlaid with diamonds.

Other options include the same design, but made in differing patterns. Matching two tone wedding rings can be popular, with perhaps the bride having her feature metal as rose gold, and the groom opting for platinum, making them a little more feminine and masculine.

Drawbacks of completely matching wedding ring sets:

* Might be too fancy and not fancy enough. Perhaps the bride is hoping for plenty of swirls and bling. Perhaps the groom is hoping for a chunky black  wedding ring. Clearly in this instance no-one is probably going to be happy with a perfect match of the other’s ideal wedding ring. However, incorporating part of the bride’s design as a lasered highlight in the groom’s wedding ring could be subtle and pull them both together. Another option would be to incorporate the rose gold from the bride’s wedding ring as a stripe in the black wedding ring.

* Might not suit both the bride and groom’s lifestyle. Incorporating the daily requirements for both the bride and groom can also become challenging if one of the couple is going to place more demands on a wedding ring than the other. However, there are many metals that are now up to rigorous physical and chemical challenges including palladium, titanium, tungsten and ceramic.

* Matching up with other jewelry. A couple may feel that they are going to be stuck with the same color metal when one might like stainless steel and the other rose gold. Of course if one of the couple has their heart set on rose gold and the other on a black ring, some creative initiative may be called for. There are many wedding ring styles that incorporate more than one metal, or more than one color now.

Wedding ring sets can be a great way for couples who are wanting matching wedding rings. Once wedding ring sets were considered to be identically matching rings. However, the contemporary spin on wedding ring sets is that they can share a common theme, or metal, or be customized for the bride and groom’s individual requirements and preferences, but still resulting in wedding rings that are perceived as a match.
